Strategies to Increase YouTube Subscribers and Video Views

The following strategies are effective for boosting both YouTube subscribers and video views.

#1 YouTube Advertising

We recently bought advertising for one of our YouTube shorts, which cost about $75. Our video was shown in the recommended area over 100,000 times and viewed over 5000 times. This came with about 100 new subscribers. Now, here’s the thing: since the advertising, we are getting a lot more organic views on our shorts because all those who viewed the advertising now see us in their shorts feed automatically. So long term, it’s difficult to imagine just how much traffic it gets; I will say this, though, it’s worth it for a new YouTuber to get that initial boost for their channel.

Note about YouTube advertising views: A view is registered when a viewer watches your video for at least 30 seconds or interacts with it by clicking on it. If your video is less than 30 seconds long, a view is counted when a viewer watches the entire video.

Here’s an example of one of our YouTube shorts that gets organic views because it gets pushed to the viewers’ feeds after watching the advertised YouTube shorts. It gets 1000 views in just two days. At this time, our channel was relatively new, so this result was pretty impressive.

#2 Create Amazing Content

Why does anyone look at YouTube videos? To look at content, and the content they want is the best version of itself. Likewise, why does anyone subscribe to YouTube channels? Because they want more great content.

Focusing on High-Quality Content

Creating high-quality content is essential for anyone looking to engage an audience effectively. High-quality content is defined as material that is engaging, informative, and visually appealing. This type of content captivates the audience and encourages them to stay tuned in, whether it’s a video, an article, or a podcast. When you focus on producing high-quality content, you not only retain viewers but also build a loyal audience who looks forward to your next release.

Understand Your Audience

One effective way to create engaging content is to understand who your target audience is. Knowing your audience allows you to tailor your material to their interests and preferences. For instance, if your audience consists of young adults interested in fitness, you might consider incorporating trending exercises, diet tips, or the latest fitness gadgets into your videos. By aligning your content with what your audience cares about, you increase the chances of them finding your work both interesting and approachable.

Get Up to Speed

In addition to knowing your audience, informing yourself about current trends within your niche can enhance your content’s relevancy. For example, if you are creating content about technology, staying updated with the latest gadgets or software updates will allow you to share information that is not only current but also valuable. Make an effort to conduct regular research by reading articles, attending webinars, or participating in discussions related to your field. This ongoing commitment to learning will shine through in your content, further establishing you as a credible source.

Create Great Visuals

Visual appeal is another critical aspect of high-quality content. Compelling visuals can significantly enhance the impact of your message. Suppose you’re producing a video; incorporating graphics, animations, or even relevant stock photos can make your content more illustrative and engaging. When you present information visually, it’s easier for viewers to comprehend complex ideas. Moreover, using thumbnails that are eye-catching can help draw more viewers to your work. For instance, a thumbnail displaying vibrant colors and clear text is more likely to attract clicks than a dull or cluttered image. We use Canva to create stunning visuals for our videos.

Be Informative

Informative content is not just about providing information but ensuring that it is understandable and accessible. Aim to break down complex concepts into smaller, digestible parts. For instance, if you are explaining a complicated procedure, consider providing a step-by-step guide focusing on one aspect at a time. Use clear definitions for any jargon or technical language that might confuse the audience. Providing examples within your explanations will create context, making the information more relatable. If you’re discussing a new cooking technique, why not demonstrate it with simple recipes that viewers can try at home?

Be Friendly

The tone of your content also plays a pivotal role in its quality. An approachable and friendly tone can make a significant difference in how your audience perceives your work. Think about how you speak to friends when sharing information and make an effort to replicate that casual yet informative tone. This can foster a connection with your viewers, making them more likely to engage with your content and share it with others. Using humor, when appropriate, can also make your content more enjoyable, helping create a memorable experience.

#3 Content Consistency

Either have similar content and look to both short and long-form videos, or just choose one of these formats for your video. The reason why is because if they are different in format and design, subscribers will react to one type well and the other not so well, which YouTube will then not send your videos as much traffic because it will think it’s not as good. Many big YouTubers lost a lot of long-form video views by switching to shorts because of the split in their audiences. It only works if the content is similar, which is sometimes difficult to achieve.

Changing your video format can have significant impacts on your subscriber count and view metrics. As I mentioned, many popular YouTubers experienced a drop in views after they shifted their content strategy. For example, when a creator who usually produces long videos suddenly starts posting mostly short clips, some subscribers might not be interested in the new format. This split in content can lead to a divided audience, where some viewers only engage with one type of video.

Finding similarities in your content across formats may seem challenging, but it’s essential for keeping your channel cohesive. Consider the core message you want to deliver. For instance, if your channel focuses on cooking, both your short and long videos could revolve around recipes. Your long-form videos could be detailed cooking tutorials, while your short videos might showcase one-minute cooking hacks or quick recipe highlights.

Another approach is to maintain a consistent tone throughout both formats. If your long videos are informative and educational, keep that same tone in your shorts. This helps to set expectations for your audience and encourages them to stay engaged regardless of the video length.

#4 Get Straight to the Content

No long introduction or time wasting, content must be delivered fast, or users will scroll or click away. I know well designed intro scenes may look good; they are now outdated and will get you less views. This means that it is crucial to get straight to the point when delivering information. No one wants to spend time reading a long introduction that does not deliver real value. Instead, content should be concise and engaging right from the start. To keep users interested, consider leading with the most important details immediately. This way, users can quickly determine if they want to continue reading or watching.

One effective strategy to achieve this is to think about the most valuable takeaway of your content. Start with a clear statement or a compelling fact that captures attention. For instance, if you are vlogging about healthy eating, opening with a surprising statistic about the benefits of vegetables can hook readers immediately. This creates curiosity and encourages them to keep going.

Directly stating the purpose of your content shows that you respect your audience’s time. For example, if you are discussing a tutorial on how to fix a leaky sink, you might open with a quick overview of the tools you’ll need, followed by a straightforward explanation of the steps involved just like what we did with our tutorial video. This approach gives the audience clarity about what to expect and encourages them to engage with the content.

#5 Promote on Social Media

Share your videos on various social media platforms to reach a broader audience and encourage sharing. Check out our article how successful social media influencers do it.

social media promotion

Sharing your videos on social media is a powerful way to grow your audience. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok have millions of active users. By posting your videos on these platforms, you create opportunities for more people to see your content. It’s important to understand that each platform has its unique style and audience. Therefore, tailoring your approach to fit the platform can significantly increase your chances of success.

Choosing the Right Platforms

When promoting your videos, consider where your target audience is most active. For instance, if your videos are of a more visual nature, platforms like Instagram and TikTok might be more effective. Alternatively, if your content is educational or informative, consider utilizing Facebook or LinkedIn. Research the demographics of each platform to choose the best fit for your content. This way, your videos can reach the right viewers.

Creating Engaging Posts

Simply sharing a video link is not enough. You need to create engaging posts that grab attention. Start by writing a compelling caption that draws viewers in. Use questions or intriguing statements to pique curiosity about your video. For example, you might ask, “Have you ever struggled with this issue?” This invites viewers to click on your video to find the answer. Additionally, consider using eye-catching images or thumbnails. Visuals can make your posts stand out in a crowded feed, increasing the chances that someone will watch your video.

Encouraging Sharing

Encouraging viewers to share your videos is crucial. To do this, include a call to action in your posts. Phrases like “Share this with a friend who needs to see this!” or “Tag someone who would love this video!” can motivate your audience to spread the word. You can also share success or feedback from viewers in your posts to build a sense of community. When people feel part of a movement or community, they are more likely to share content with their own networks.

Timing Your Posts

Timing can significantly impact the effectiveness of your post. Each social media platform has different peak times when users are most active. Research the best times for each platform to post your videos. For example, on Facebook, late mornings and early afternoons during weekdays often garner more views. On the other hand, Instagram might see more engagement in the early evening. By posting during these peak times, you increase the likelihood that your audience will see and engage with your video.

#6 Collaborate with Other YouTubers

Collaborating with other YouTubers can be an excellent strategy to grow your channel. When you partner with creators in your niche, you can tap into their audience and gain more exposure. This means that your content can reach viewers who might not have discovered you otherwise. Building relationships with other YouTubers can open doors to new opportunities and introduce your channel to a broader audience.

Finding the Right Partners

The first step in collaboration is finding the right partners. Look for YouTubers who create content similar to yours or who share your audience. It’s important that their content aligns with your style and values. You can start by searching for creators within your niche on YouTube. Check their subscriber count, engagement rate, and the types of videos they produce. Aim for those who have a small to medium-sized audience, as they may be more open to collaboration than larger channels.

Collaboration with other influencers

Reaching Out

Once you have identified potential partners, it’s time to reach out. You can send a friendly message through social media or email. Introduce yourself and explain why you admire their work. Be specific about what you like regarding their content and underline the potential benefits of a collaboration. Suggest a few ideas on how the two of you can work together. This could include a guest appearance in each other’s videos or a joint project that showcases both of your strengths.

Types of Collaborations

There are various types of collaborations you can explore. One popular method is to create a joint video where both of you appear on camera. You can discuss a relevant topic or challenge that pertains to your niches. For instance, if one YouTuber focuses on cooking and another on healthy living, they could collaborate on a video showcasing healthy recipes.

Another option is to feature each other in a video. For example, you could share your thoughts about their content or interview them about their expertise. This not only provides fresh content but also helps establish credibility for both creators.

You might also consider creating a series where both of you take turns releasing videos on a specific theme. Having a set theme gives viewers something to look forward to, and it encourages them to check out both channels.

Promoting Each Other’s Work

After creating the collaborative content, promotion is key. Encourage both of your audiences to check out the collaboration. Share the video across all your social media platforms and ask your partner to do the same. This mutual promotion can significantly expand your reach.

Additionally, consider creating teasers or behind-the-scenes content to generate interest before the main video goes live. You could make short clips or images that highlight the best moments of your collaboration. Share these posts on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, or Twitter to captivate your audiences.

Building Long-Term Relationships

Building long-term relationships with other YouTubers can lead to ongoing collaboration opportunities. This can create a network of support where creators help each other with ideas, feedback, and resources. Keep in touch with your collaborators and look for additional projects to work on together. This not only strengthens your relationship with them but also allows both channels to grow over time.

Whenever a new opportunity arises, whether it’s joining in on a new project or participating in an online event, be open to collaborating. Your network can become one of your strongest assets in the YouTube community.

Learning from Each Other

By working together, you can exchange ideas and techniques that can enhance your own content. For example, if you team up with a YouTuber who is great at editing, you may pick up some editing tips that could improve your videos. Likewise, they may learn something from you regarding content creation or audience engagement.

Taking time to discuss what works and what doesn’t in your channels can provide valuable insights. This exchange of knowledge can leads to better content for both creators, ensuring both channels continue to flourish.

Embracing Change and Adaptation

YouTube is constantly evolving, and staying relevant means adapting to changing trends. Collaborating with others can help you be more aware of these shifts. When you team up with different creators, you expose yourself to new audiences and, consequently, new styles, ideas, and trends. Pay attention to what resonates with audiences on your collaborative videos, as this feedback can guide your content strategy moving forward.

As you collaborate more, you might discover new formats or styles that resonate with viewers. Being willing to experiment and embrace change can help keep your channel fresh and engaging.

#7 Post Consistently

Establish a Regular Posting Schedule

Posting consistently is one of the keys to building a strong online presence. When you establish a regular posting schedule, your audience knows when to expect new content. This familiarity helps to engage your audience and encourages them to return for more. For example, if you post every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m., your followers will start to anticipate your posts.

Consistency doesn’t mean posting the same type of content every time. YouTube now allows creators to post status updates, such as images and texts under the Community section. With this additional feature, you can vary your posts by including different formats like articles, images, or videos.  This keeps your content fresh and interesting while still adhering to a regular schedule. For instance, you might share a video on Tuesday and follow it up with a written article on Thursday that offers deeper insights into the video content.

To create a consistent posting schedule, first decide how often you want to post. Some people find success posting daily, while others may choose a few times a week. Assess your resources, such as time and content creation skills, to choose a frequency that works for you. Once you set your posting frequency, mark it in your calendar or use a digital tool to keep you on track.

Create a Content Calendar

One effective way to stay consistent with your postings is to create a content calendar. This calendar can help you plan what to post and when. Start by outlining themes or topics you want to cover for the month. For example, if you blog and vlog about cooking, you can assign different types of recipes or cooking tips to each week.

Content calendar

Next, break down your planned posts into specific ideas. Detailing what you want to say in each post will make it easier when the day comes to create the content. You might include ideas such as “easy meal prep recipes,” “quick breakfast ideas,” or “vegan dinner options.” This preparation helps reduce the stress of wondering what to post on a particular day.

You can use a variety of tools to manage your content calendar, from simple spreadsheets to dedicated applications. Digital tools often have additional features like reminders, so you can get notifications when it’s time to start drafting your content. By taking time to organize your thoughts and ideas, you can streamline your posting process and ensure consistency.

#8 Analyze Your Analytics

Consistency is not just about posting regularly; it’s also about assessing how well your content is received. Regular analysis of your post performance can help inform your future strategies. Look into the engagement metrics associated with your posts. Metrics like likes, shares, and comments can help you determine what types of content resonate most with your audience.

Regularly check your YouTube Analytics to see what works and adjust your strategy based on viewer behavior. Implementing these strategies can help grow your YouTube views and subscriber base effectively.

You might discover that posts about specific subjects perform better than others, or that videos tend to get more shares compared to text-heavy posts. Based on this data, consider tweaking your content calendar to focus more on what works. For example, if quick recipes generate higher engagement than slow-cooker recipes, you might decide to share more quick recipes in the future.

Additionally, it’s useful to pay attention to the times you post. Experiment with scheduling your content at different times of the day. Track the engagement rates to see if certain times lead to improved engagement. Knowing when your audience is most active can enhance your chances of reaching them effectively.

More Strategies for Increasing YouTube Subscribers

  • Wait until the end or later into your videos before you ask someone to subscribe. If you ask them too soon, they will stop watching. Furthermore, who wants to subscribe before they know if the content is good?
  • When starting your channel, don’t send your new video to your subscriber list because it will limit your reach. YouTube will only send it to your subscribers, and if you only have a handful, you’re limiting your scope.

More Strategies for Increasing YouTube Video Views

  • Optimize your videos for search engines: It’s quite similar to website search engine optimization, you want to name your video the same as the search terms you want to rank for. The same goes for descriptions and thumbnails. Use relevant keywords in your titles and descriptions to improve search visibility and attract more viewers.
  • Use Eye-Catching Thumbnails: Design custom thumbnails that stand out and give potential viewers a clear idea of what your video is about.

Here is an example of a catchy thumbnail. Use darker backgrounds for lighter texts and think of attention-grabbing phrases to pique your viewers’ interest.

hacks to drive more traffic to your website

  • Split test thumbnails: Doing this can increase conversions on clickthrough.
  • Reply to every comment: it increases video engagement, which tells YouTube your video is good and should be shown more.
  • Strike a Conversation: Leaving a pinned comment on the video can also drive engagement, encouraging your viewers to participate and share their thoughts. This sends a positive signal to the system, making the video more likely to be suggested in feeds.
  • Create Playlists: Organize your videos into playlists to keep viewers engaged longer and make it easier for them to find related content.
  • Leverage End Screens and Cards: Use YouTube’s features to promote other videos or playlists, encouraging viewers to continue watching your content.

My Favourite Ways to Increase YouTube Views and Subscribers

In conclusion, increasing YouTube views and subscribers requires a multifaceted approach that includes creating high-quality, engaging content, optimizing video titles, descriptions, and tags, and actively engaging with your audience through comments and social media. Additionally, collaborating with other YouTubers and promoting your videos through various online platforms can also significantly boost your channel’s visibility.

Lastly, if I could not use any other strategy, my favorite three methods to increase YouTube views and subscribers would be collaborating with other YouTubers, buying advertising, and consistently creating high-quality, valuable content for my audience.
